From Jude Chinedu, Enugu

A laterite-laden truck on Friday crushed three occupants of a minibus to death, while two others were critically injured

The incident occurred at Orie Emene, along Enugu-Abakaliki expressway around 7pm.

It was gathered that the minibus which was fully loaded was heading to Old Park but was hit from the back as the driver stopped to discharge some passengers.

An eyewitness, Michael Okechi, who narrated how the incident unfolded said that “The truck approached the junction from Adoration Road and crossed the railway line before hitting the minibus at the junction. The truck wasn’t speeding, and there was no brake failure.

“The police have apprehended the truck driver, but I fear they might be swayed by bribes from the construction firm, letting him slip away scot-free.

“The driver must be charged with manslaughter or even first-degree murder. Those three lives lost, along with the two still clinging to life, demand justice.”

Another eyewitness said a roadside seller, a mother with her baby were affected by the accident but could not ascertain the level of injury they sustained.
