The former chief of staff to the Imo government, Uche Nwosu has promised to empower five hundred women and youths within the next one week.
Nwosu who is also the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, made the pledge on Thursday at a brief event organized the Ugwumba Leadership Centre for Africa in honour of his birthday in Abuja.
Nwosu said he decided not to celebrate his birthday this year following the hardship being faced by Nigerians but focus on alleviating poverty among the women and youths through investment in agriculture and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.
“This is how I intend celebrating my birthday this year. my plan is to alleviate the plight of women and youths. I will empower 500 women and youths across the state” Nwosu emphasised.
The Former Chief of staff to the Imo government explained that empowering youths in Nigeria will reduce the unemployment crisis stressing that Nigerian youths are not lazy but highly gifted and innovative.
“If the government can set up a strategic mentoring program for the youths, the unemployment crisis and the insecurity we are experiencing today in the country will become a thing of the past,” he noted.
He reiterated commitment to continue to empower women to enable them to excel in their various callings adding that there are gains in improving women in all aspects of the society.
Nwosu also pledged his readiness to ensure that women are encouraged to showcase their ability to perform like their male counterparts.
“Empowering women is an existential issue for Nigeria and holding them down means holding the society down.
“There is no way any country can develop without women. The country cannot develop without women. A family cannot succeed without the mother.
“Women empowerment can be provision of education, mentoring and training to learn a trade, provision of funding to start a trade to enable her to build independence to take charge of her life to the benefit of the community at large,” Nwosu stated.
