The Benue National Assembly Caucus and Federal Appointees Forum has praised the youths of Benue State for their decision to avoid the recent nationwide protests. This national protest, which began on August 1, 2024, aimed at demanding better governance, reduced petroleum prices, and a lower cost of living, turned violent in some regions, leading to property destruction, looting, and loss of life.
In contrast, Benue State saw active commercial and social engagements, with towns like Makurdi, Otukpo, Gboko, and Katsina-Ala remaining largely unaffected by the unrest. The Forum attributed this peaceful stance to the effective leadership and guidance of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume and Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Prof. Joseph Utsev.

The statement, released on Friday morning by Hon. Philip Agbese, the Forum’s spokesperson, lauded the Benue youths for their commitment to peace and stability, emphasizing that their actions prevented the state from experiencing the chaos seen in other areas. The Forum expressed confidence in the leadership of Akume and Utsev and their role in guiding the youths towards constructive paths.
The statement also extended support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration, commending their efforts to foster progress and unity in Nigeria. It reaffirmed the Forum’s loyalty to both Akume and Tinubu, highlighting their belief in their ability to lead Benue State and Nigeria towards greater development.
