MTN has temporarily closed all its stores and service centres nationwide following a public outcry over SIM card deactivations.
The move comes after a wave of anger from subscribers whose lines were blocked on Sunday due to discrepancies between their National Identification Numbers (NINs) and SIM registration details. A viral social media video captured a crowd of frustrated customers vandalizing an MTN office in Lagos’ FESTAC Town area.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed on X.com that authorities intervened and restored order at the scene. However, the incident highlighted the growing tension surrounding the NIN-SIM linkage policy.

In a statement released Tuesday, MTN announced the nationwide closure of its offices, stating: “Dear MTN customer, please be advised that all our shops are closed today, July 30th, 2024.” The company hasn’t yet provided a reason for the closure or a timeframe for reopening.
This situation underscores the challenges of implementing the NIN-SIM linkage program while ensuring smooth communication channels with subscribers.
