Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has been lauded for its commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations, with particular praise directed towards Group Chief Executive Officer Mr Mele Kyari for his exemplary leadership and transformative impact on the organization.
This commendation came from a coalition of civil society organizations, bloggers, vloggers, content creators, and community-based organizations at a national conference in Abuja on Monday.
The conference, themed “Enhancing Public Trust Between NNPCL and Civil Society Organizations, Bloggers, and the Public,” recognized the achievements of the NNPCL under Kyari’s leadership.
While acknowledging the significant progress made by the NNPCL, the coalition called for further advancements in transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s petroleum sector to support national economic growth.
In his keynote address, Dr Stein Uguru, Director of the coalition, highlighted that Kyari’s tenure has been marked by strategic investments aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s oil and gas production and advancing national development.
Represented by Comrade Yakubu Gaida, Uguru noted that Kyari’s visionary leadership is reflected in the increase in national crude oil reserves, moving towards the 40,000-billion-barrel target. He also praised the NNPCL’s engagement with community-based organizations to ensure initiatives are socially responsible and aligned with community needs.
Dr. Uguru emphasized the critical role of transparency and accountability in building public trust, advocating for regular updates, accessible information, and mechanisms that prioritize public interest. He also highlighted the important role of civil society organizations in monitoring activities and ensuring effective oversight.
Alhaji Muhammed Yusuf, President of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, commended Kyari for his transformative leadership and dedication to transparency. He praised the NNPCL’s commitment to operational openness, which has earned the trust of both Nigerians and the international community.
Dr Okpanachi Paul, Coordinator of the North Central Young Professionals Forum, applauded Kyari’s focus on human capital development. He noted the NNPCL’s recruitment of over a thousand graduate trainees, which has created substantial employment opportunities and fostered skills development for the youth.
