The Kogi State Government has allocated $31.2 million for the development of a livestock service centre, a project anticipated to significantly contribute to the state’s economic growth.
Dr Olufemi Bolarin, the Kogi State Project Coordinator for the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support project (L-PRES), disclosed this information on Thursday at the proposed Livestock Service Centre (LSC) site located at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara.
Dr. Bolarin outlined the budget allocation for the development of the LSC as follows: $4.05 million for 2024, $6.24 million for 2025, $9.98 million for 2026, and $10.92 million for 2027.
“The Kogi Livestock Service Centre will significantly contribute to the economic development of Kogi State by creating jobs, enhancing productivity, and fostering sustainable practices,” Dr. Bolarin said. “This project will not only boost the livestock sector but also catalyse broader economic growth and development in the region.”
He added, “The Livestock Service Centre will be a premier hub for livestock innovation and development, strategically positioned to enhance market access, support industrial synergy, and foster academic excellence.”
Dr. Bolarin emphasised the centre’s objectives, stating, “The Kogi Livestock Service Centre will deliver comprehensive livestock services that drive economic growth and development in Kogi State by leveraging strategic market proximity, industrial collaboration, and academic expertise.
“We are committed to providing unparalleled technical assistance, facilitating market access, and promoting sustainable livestock practices, contributing to the overall advancement of Nigeria’s livestock sector.”
Earlier, Kogi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Timothy Ojoma, reaffirmed the present administration’s commitment to ensuring food security in the state. Ojoma expressed optimism that Kogi State would receive approval for the establishment of the Livestock Service Centre, emphasising the state’s safety for investment.
“You will recall an incident where 31 students were kidnapped from this school. Thankfully, 29 were rescued unhurt, though we tragically lost two. The sponsors of these kidnappers were dealt with decisively for their evil acts,” Ojoma stated. “Unlike other cases where students remain missing for years, the Kogi State Government acted swiftly to rescue the kidnapped victims.”
The National Project Coordinator for L-PRES, Sanusi Abubakar, expressed satisfaction with the proposed site for the Livestock Service Centre in Osara, Kogi State.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who later received the national delegation of L-PRES at the Government House in Lokoja, assured them of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the success of the World Bank project in Kogi State.
