Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has convened an emergency meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to avert a hunger protest and potential riot in Nigeria.
In an interview after the emergency meeting at the Maiduguri Government House on Wednesday, Zulum appealed to all Nigerians to avoid any protests or actions that may bring hardship to others. “Let us engage in positive dialogue,” he said.
Zulum explained that any break in the peace could have disastrous consequences for the state and its residents.
According to him, the Federal Government and states are doing everything possible to reduce the hardship experienced in the country.
The Governor urged everyone to prioritize peace and dialogue and to work together towards a more stable and prosperous future for all.
The appeal comes as the state is slowly rebuilding and recovering from the devastating effects of the insurgency and the threat of nationwide hunger riots.
“Let us engage in positive dialogue. The federal government and states are doing everything possible to ensure they reduce the hardship experienced in the country. Many stakeholders have committed themselves to avoid any protests or riots, and the Borno State government will follow up to ensure that they fulfil their promises.”
Also speaking, The CAN Chairman, Dr Bogna Bakeni, said, “What dialogue and constructive engagement cannot do, protest cannot solve it.”
He explained that even after protests, engagement is still necessary. He called on religious leaders to work towards ensuring justice prevails.
