In Zamfara State, local government workers have expressed their gratitude for the recent Supreme Court ruling on autonomy. Former Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chairman, Hon. Sani Danmasani, supported the decision, stating that local governments would no longer be at the mercy of state governors.
In an interview, Danmasani, a leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), called the judgement a victory for democracy for local government workers.
He supported the members of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the state, who welcomed the ruling.
Danmasani emphasized that state governors would no longer have the authority to dissolve democratically elected local government chairmen and councilors.
“I am now more comfortable with Nigerian democracy, governed for the people by the people, where local government workers will no longer be beggars to the governors,” he said.

A former national officer of NULGE, who wished to remain anonymous, added that the judgement would ensure more democratic benefits reach the grassroots.
“Caretaker committees will no longer be imposed on local governments; instead, elected officials will manage and make developmental decisions for their communities without interference from state governors,” he explained.
He also mentioned that managing local government funds by democratically elected officials would strengthen the connection between the government and the people, ensuring prompt responses to community needs.
“Federal allocations will be sent directly to local governments, bypassing state governments. This is a welcome development that will bring transparency, accountability, and clear responsibility for any embezzlement,” he concluded.
