Former President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan has reacted to the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Tinubu, saying it will reposition the sector.
He expressed belief that the Ministry when fully on stream would embark on reforms, given the growing importance of livestock production to the nation’s economy and the need for improved animal welfare.
In a statement by his Media Aide, Izrel Tabiowo issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Lawan was quoted as saying that the Ministry when established, will be tasked with developing and implementing policies and programmes to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the livestock industry in Nigeria.
The constitution of the Committee on Livestock Reforms chaired by the President and co-chaired by the ex-INEC boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega, was laudable and showed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to develop the sector, Lawan said
According to him, the reforms would address the long-standing challenges of grazing, cattle rustling and animal diseases, when all the challenges are addressed, agricultural productivity is assured.
Lawan said: “The establishment of the Ministry of Livestock; and the constitution of the Committee on Livestock Reforms are clear indications that President Tinubu recognizes the immense potential of the livestock sector to contribute to the growth and development of Nigeria.
“I am confident that these initiatives will not only boost the livestock industry but also create jobs, reduce poverty, and enhance the well-being of millions of Nigerians who depend on livestock for their livelihoods.”
The former Senate President explained that reviewing and repositioning the livestock sector with inputs from diverse groups of stakeholders, including government officials, industry experts, farmers, and civil society organizations will stimulate economic growth and ensure food security.
He, however, urged the Committee on Livestock Reforms to include as parts of its recommendations to the federal government, the prioritization and development of conflict resolution mechanisms and early warning systems to prevent and mitigate conflicts between farmers and herders.
“The establishment of the Ministry of Livestock and the constitution of the National Committee on Livestock Reforms are, indeed, welcome developments.
“These moves by the President demonstrate the government’s commitment to modernizing the livestock sector and positioning it as a key driver of economic growth and food security in Nigeria.”
