Igbo Town Unions have lauded South East Governors’ Forum for joining the push for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
They described the governors’ decision to approach President Bola Tinubu over the issue as a welcome development.
President of Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU), Chief Emeka Diwe, said that their involvement will enhance the long battle for his release by various groups, organizations and well-meaning individuals, both in and outside Nigeria.
According to Diwe, though the governors actually joined the campaign late, he noted that the story would have been different today, if they had joined ASITU earlier enough to push for the unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader.
He declared that their decision as apt since Kanu is still being incarcerated by the Department of State Services (DSS).
ASITU President also hailed all the members of the National Assembly who had thrown their weight behind the struggle in the past.
He explained that his group had churned out countless press releases, held many press conferences and strong negotiation with the government, aimed at securing the unconditional freedom of Kanu; which was yet to yield result.
Diwe called on the President to show that he is a democrat by releasing Kanu, who was long released by court of competent jurisdiction, but was held back by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
He further assured the continued determination of ASITU to ensure that marginalization, victimization, nepotism and all forms of man-made subjugation, particularly against the Igbo, were reduced to the minimum.
