Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has selected caretaker chairmen for the state’s 23 local government units.
Fubara delivered the list to the state House of Assembly, which is governed by factional Speaker Victor Jumbo, on Tuesday.
The nomination came amid a growing political crisis in the state, with past council chairmen refusing to leave their positions after their terms ended.
Fubara’s message to the legislature was contained in a statement published on Tuesday night by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West.

On Tuesday, protesting youths loyal to Fubara ousted chairmen who refused to vacate their posts, exacerbating the state’s dilemma.

A police officer was slain at the Eberi-Omuma secretariat in Omuma Local Government Area following a dispute between supporters of Fubara and those of his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.
To prevent additional breakdowns in law and order, the police announced on Tuesday evening that they had taken over all 23 municipal secretariats.
The three-year term of the ended on Monday, but they promised to continue in office, citing the Local Government Amendment Law 2024 passed by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.
