Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has declared Saturday, August 10th, 2024, as the date for the conduct of the next local government council elections in the state.
The declaration was made by the BASIEC Chairman, Ahmed Makama while briefing journalists in his office on Friday.
He stated that, “In accordance with the relevant laws, BASIEC hereby gives 60 days’ notice for the conduct of the local government council elections in Bauchi State.”
He added that, “If you calculate 60 days from today, it will be August 6, which is not a Saturday, and elections are usually conducted on Saturdays. We have therefore moved the election to Saturday, August 10, 2024.”
The BASIEC Chairman called on political parties and other stakeholders in the conduct of the election to start the processes that will ensure smooth conduct.
Ahmed Makama assured that the Commission is prepared to deliver free, fair, and acceptable elections that will make Bauchi State a leader in the conduct of local government council elections in the country.
He added that the Commission will rely on the voter register maintained by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing that “BASIEC does not keep its own voter register.
The BASIEC Chairman added that with this announcement, the process of selling nomination forms has commenced, and interested people are urged to come out to purchase the forms.
He, however, reminded the politicians that open campaigns have not started until 30 days before the date of the elections, as stipulated in the law.
