Immediate past Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has expressed deep sadness over the killing of soldiers at Obikabia Junction by unknown persons, describing the act as barbaric and unacceptable.
In a statement on Saturday, Ikpeazu stated that the killing of the soldiers doesn’t represent who we are as a people, noting that such barbarism against soldiers who were on a lawful assignment to keep our people safe is difficult to understand.
He extended his deep condolences to the Chief of Army Staff and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army over the unfortunate incident. He also sent his condolences to the families of the bereaved soldiers.
The former Governor urged the security agencies to be thorough in their investigations into this incident and to fish out the perpetrators of the crime.
He, however, called on the military authorities to exercise due restraint and professionalism during the process of investigation and to ensure that innocent citizens are not made to bear the brunt of what happened.
Ikpeazu prayed to Almighty God to restore peace in the land and protect our people.
On Thursday, IPOB had declared a sit-at-home to remember those killed during the Biafra civil war.
During the sit-at-home, some unknown gunmen killed five soldiers in Aba, Abia State.
The incident took place at Obikabia Junction checkpoint, in Obingwa Local Government Area.
