The recent hike in the price of garri, a staple food, has left many Nigerians groaning.
Reports indicate that the price of garri has nearly doubled in the past few months, exacerbating the financial strain on many families.
Tribune gathered across all social media platforms that Nigerians are lamenting the increased cost of garri, which is a fundamental part of the Nigerian diet, especially among lower and middle-income households.
Reacting on Facebook, @Ye Mi said, “Garri isn’t for the poor again 🥲,” highlighting the irony that a food once considered affordable and accessible is now out of reach for many.
Another Facebook user, @@Ale ca, pointed out that garri is now sold at the same rate as rice. She remarked, “Garri and rice are now sold for the same price…. I prefer buying rice o.” This comparison shows the increase in garri prices, pushing consumers to opt for other staples that offer more value for the same cost.
Anselm Samuel also lamented the price hike, noting that a basin is now sold for N16,000, making wastage not an option. “Basin of Garry is 16k in my area! 😭😭 This is not a period someone should smoke Garry anyhow ooo!” he wrote.
Dada Adewale shared his decision to stop buying garri due to the continuous price increases. He said, “I don’t know because I have stopped buying garri since it keeps rising in price.”
“Garri no be poor man food again cox the price dey their pocket,” Suleiman Sanusi reacted.

X users also showed their grievances by telling the prices at which garri is sold in their respective locations:
