The Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dayo Mobereola, has disclosed that priority attention would be given to the automated registration of Ships in the agency.
Mobereola also stated that gender inclusion would also receive a boost under his administration.
The new NIMASA helmsman made the disclosures when he met with the Maritime Stakeholders in Lagos on Thursday.
He said “Some of the things we have in mind have been said here. There is going to be automation of the Ship Registry, and I assure you it is going to happen very quickly. The gender inclusion is something that we are going to seriously look into.”
The DG NIMASA said that the past weeks have been interesting, as there have been meetings, collaborations and interesting ideas aimed at moving the agency forward.
He said he was particularly happy that all the directors of the agency were present as they are going to go back to the agency to put all that have been discussed to practice.
“Most importantly, I am very glad that the directors of NIMASA are present because what we have learnt today we are going to go back and develop objectives, goals, and strategies and we are all going to do it together because we are going to move the sector forward, move the industry forward. We have to align with the vision of the President and the Minister to actualize the purpose of the marine and blue economy.”
Mobereola added that the purpose of the gathering was for him and his team to listen to industry stakeholders on how best to move the industry forward, and that all they said would be put to good use.”Our purpose here for this forum is to come and listen and I can tell you we have taken notes of all the comments, and I assure you that all that have been said here is going to be put into consideration when we are developing our plan for the first four years so that there would be no exclusivity. We are all going to do it together. The purpose of NIMASA is to serve the industry, and we cannot decide what is good for the industry unless the Industry is working with us in order for us to have strong partnerships to be able to excel.
“Ship owners, every aspect of the professionals, practitioners, that have said something, challenges, and also proffer solutions, you can be rest assured that all these points that have been raised would be looked at, considered, and put into our strategy so that there would be a sustainable plan for the maritime sector,” Mobereola explained.

In his welcome Address, Capt Emmanuel Ihenacho said that under the leadership of Dr Adedayo Mobereola, it is hoped and expected that NIMASA would be making significant strides in promoting ship safety, maritime security, and environmental sustainability in Nigerian waters.
“His dedication to capacity building, infrastructure development, and environmental protection will most definitely position Nigeria as a key player in the global maritime community.
“As we move forward together, we are confident that under the leadership of Dr Adedayo Mobereola, NIMASA will continue to drive innovation, pursue collaboration with stakeholders, and engender positive progress in our industry as a whole.
“We expect the DG to be fully cognisant of the impact of technological developments in the marine and blue economy on the content and form of policies to be developed. We look forward to working together with the DG to address the challenges ahead and to seize the opportunities that lies before us,” Iheanacho stated.
Among those who made interventions at the forum include, Former DG, NIMASA, Raymond Omotseye, who said that NIMASA must return to it’s core mandates. also advocated review of the agency’s organogram, salary review, process audit, and that ship owners should be able to register their ships from their offices, certification of seafarers to avoid quacks, and creation of enabling environment for a national carrier.
Mama Dockworkers, Princess Vicky Haarstrup, in her views said that the welfare of the dockworkers is critical and important, adding that there is need to train all the dockworkers. She stated that even though there is training for the workers such training should be scaled up.
