The Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has suspended the Commissioner for Commerce, Aminu Kanta, over alleged misappropriation of Ramadan feeding funds.
The suspension, which is with immediate effect, followed the allegations of misappropriation of funds allocated for the Ramadan Iftar feeding programme in the Babura Local Government Area of the state.
This is contained in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, on Friday in Dutse, the state capital.
According to the statement, the affected commissioner would remain suspended, pending the outcome of an investigative committee established by the governor to probe the allegation.
“Governor Namadi’s action underscores his commitment to responsible financial management and tackling misuse of public funds,” the statement said.
The State Executive Council approved the release of N2.8bn for the Ramadan Iftar feeding programme across the 27 local government areas of the state.
A total of 600 designated feeding centres were established with a minimum of two locations in each political ward.
Additionally, designated centres were established within higher institutions across the state.
Each centre provides daily meals for at least 300 people throughout the Ramadan period.
