In a startling assertion from behind bars, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has directly linked his detention to the surge in violence in the south-eastern region of Nigeria.
He also expressed his determination to work towards ending the current wave of violence in the south east region once he regains freedom.
Following the denial of bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, Kanu addressed the court’s proceedings and emphasised his stance on crime and violence in the region.
He asserted, “Anybody committing crime cannot go free. I swear it. Anybody committing crime in the East cannot go free. They are doing it because I am in DSS custody. If I were to be outside, nobody can try this.”
Kanu also hinted at potential complicity within the government, suggesting that some individuals might be profiting from the insecurity in the region.
He asserted his authority within the IPOB movement, stating, “Who is the bagger or idiot that will speak when I am talking?
“That, I will give an order in the East, who is the idiot that will counter it? Nobody can. I am Nnamdi Kanu. Rubbish!”
Furthermore, Kanu made it clear that anyone involved in violence in the name of IPOB would face consequences, asserting that peace could be restored to the region within minutes if he were released from custody.
