Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has disclosed plans to establish minimum qualifications for primary and secondary school teachers across the state.
The governor announced this on Saturday during the sixth and seventh combined convocation ceremonies of the Federal University Wukari, FUW, in Wukari Local Government Council.
He said the new measure will ensure that learners are guided by educators with solid academic qualifications.
According to him, primary school teachers will be required to have a minimum qualification of a university degree, while secondary school teachers will have at least a master’s degree.
Gov Kefas further said his administration has concluded plans to provide more training opportunities to ensure that teachers update their knowledge.
He urged the graduands of the institution to consider the noble teaching profession, telling them that their expertise can shape and add value to the education sector.
While commending the university for its dedication to knowledge delivery and the role it is playing in shaping the future of the young ones, he said, “[the state] government will follow up with the federal government to ensure that laws establishing the university are properly put in place.”
Elated by the development, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Jude Samani Rabo, commended the dedication and commitment of the staff of the institution towards equipping the graduands with the right knowledge and skills.
He also appreciated the state government under the incumbent administration for the support it has been giving to the university, including the donation of a general hospital, which is now the university’s teaching hospital, and the donations of several hectares of land to the institution.
