Labour claimed Rishi Sunak was “running scared” of holding a general election on May 2 and said the Prime Minister still had time to reconsider.
Ellie Reeves, Labour’s deputy national campaign coordinator, said this morning that Mr Sunak should “just get on and call” the election to “give the public a say”.
She told GB News: “What I would say to Rishi Sunak is look, there is still time to call it. He could call an election up until March 26 to take place on May 2.
“So, just get on and call it. May 2 is the right time in the electoral cycle to have an election. We have got council and mayoral elections on that day. What is he running scared of? It is time to give the public a say and he has still got time to call it.”
Mr Sunak yesterday ruled out holding a general election on the same day as local elections on May 2. He said a general election will not be held “on that day”.
The comments did not rule out choosing another date in May or June but will be taken as a sign that the Tories have decided against a spring election. A general election must be held by January 2025 at the latest.
