Former referee Luca Marelli has cleared the air on controversies surrounding Victor Osimhen’s penalty in Napoli’s 2-1 win against Juventus in the Serie A on Sunday.
He maintained that Maurizio Mariani was on point in his decision to award a penalty to Napoli the Serie A champions.
Napoli ran away with a 2-1 win over Juventus in a Serie A clash at the Diego Maradona Stadium on Sunday night.
Georgia forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the home side in front but Federico Chiesa equalized with eight minutes of normal time left.
However, at the 85th minute, Mariani awarded a penalty to Napoli after a review on the pitchside monitor.
The referee deemed a tackle from the young Belgian midfielder Joseph Nonge caught Osimhen on the ankle.
Osimhen stepped out to take the penalty but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Szczesny but Giacomo Raspadori was fast enough to score from the followup in the 88th minute.
“We focus on the penalty that decides the match. Osimhen controls the ball between two players: Nonge ‘s intervention is not immediately noticeable, but it is there and it is clear on the Napoli striker’s ankle,” Mariani said on DAZN via Tuttojuve.
“It’s right to go and review the action. There are no doubts about the penalty and the yellow card for the Juventus player.”
