The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged Nigerians to be active participants in the ongoing constitutional review.
Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Review, stated this on Sunday ahead of the inauguration of the committee on Monday, February 26.
The 37-man committee has received about 44 bills seeking alterations to some provisions of the constitution on sundry issues including state police, Local Governments’ autonomy, transition to parliamentary system, amongst others.
The lawmaker also called for the jettisoning of primordial sentiments amongst the major ethnic nationalities of Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba, noting that national unity should be given paramount consideration at all times.
Kalu made the call while playing host to a delegation of Arewa Consultative Progressive Forum who paid him a courtesy visit on Saturday.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu on Sunday, Kalu was quoted as saying, “As we are doing the constitutional review, I want to assure you there is a place for you. You should participate fully to make sure that the interest of Arewa Consultantive Forum is captured in the constitution.
“I reiterate our commitment to fortifying the democratic tenets that bind us together. This commitment is hinged on the principles of equality, justice, and fairness for all, regardless of region, tribe, or religion.
“I urge you today to develop a pan-Nigerian approach in your deliberations and activities. Let your actions and decisions be guided by the national interest. Think Nigeria first! This is not just a call to patriotism, but a call to duty, a call to the service of our nation.
“I urge you today to develop a Nigerian approach in your deliberations and activities.
“Let your actions and decisions be guided by the national interest. Not regional interests. Not religious interests, not tribal interests,.”
The lawmaker who represents Bende Federal Constituency also reiterated the commitment of the parliament towards framing policies and enacting legislations that will stimulate the economy for optimal productivity.
“Our policy statements are a reflection of our collective resolve to redefine our nation’s narrative. We are committed to the implementation of policies that are inclusive, progressive, and people-centered; policies that will stimulate economic growth, improve social welfare, and encourage national development.
“However, the realization of these policies cannot be achieved without the active participation of our vibrant youth. The youth are the lifeline of our nation, they are the architects of our future,” he said.
He also used the opportunity to drum support for the Peace In South East Project, an initiative that employs non- kinetic measures to restore peace in the South-East region.
Kalu said, “It (PISE-P) is an initiative that will promote all these non kinetic approaches. It is an initiative that transcends political and tribal lines, focusing on the common goal of ensuring that every Nigerian, irrespective of tribe, religion, region enjoys the dividends of democracy.
“The project is geared towards addressing the root causes of conflict in the southeast, fostering dialogue, asking for understanding among different ethnic groups and creating an environment conducive for socio economic development. Through this project, we aim to build bridges of harmony, break the gems of discord, and weave a tapestry of unity and progress.
“Let us remember that the strength of Nigeria lies in our unity. Let us put aside our differences and work together for the peace, prosperity and progress of our beloved nation. Together, we can build a Nigeria where peace and justice reign supreme.”
Earlier in his presentation, the National Chairman of the Forum, Jibrin Madobi, told Kalu that they were glad with his leadership style and vision for Nigeria.
