Federal Capital Territory police command has said it is not aware of any intending protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in the country’s seat of power.
The labour unions had vowed to embark on a two-day nationwide mass protest on February 27 and 28, 2024, over the biting economic hardship being faced by Nigerians.
Disclosing this at a press conference last Friday, the NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, had said the decision was made to protest the current hardship being faced by Nigerians.
However, in its reaction on Tuesday, the police, said it is not aware of any intending protest by the labour unions in the FCT, just as it vowed to go after hoodlums that may want to cause mayhem should the NLC embark on the protest as reported.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a short statement posted on her official X handle on Tuesday.
She said: “In response to concerns raised by some Journalists over the planned nationwide protests by the NLC and the security of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), I wish to note that the FCT Police Command isn’t aware of any intending protest, however measures will be emplaced to ensure that hoodlums do not take advantage of any activities of the NLC to disrupt the peace in the FCT, if the protest does occur.”
She had earlier posted that the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, advised residents of the territory to involve the police in the profiling of their domestic workers, noting the new trend and pattern of kidnapping by domestic workers.
