The Student Union Government of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, has condemned the invasion of its off-campus community by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The union also revealed that a female student was molested, while some students sustained bodily injuries as a result of the midnight raid.
This was contained in a statement by the union released on Wednesday.
The statement was jointly signed by the President, Olayemi Oluwasoromidayo and the General Secretary, Sodiq Bashir.
According to the statement, the operatives broke into more than three school lodges at the South Gate community around 3am on Wednesday, February 14.
In November, the EFCC Chairman placed a ban on sting operations at night following the outrage that ensued after operatives arrested suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
EFFC operatives had invaded the off-campus hostels of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
The FUTA Student Union said it is making efforts to secure the release of the arrested students.
The statement read, “We want to state that this sudden arrest is unlawful, illegal and an insult to the Executive Chairman of EFCC whose directive was breached.
“We have disheartening security issues that the Federal Government needs to help us attend to but EFCC decided to add to our security threats. Again, Nigeria has failed us.
“It is imperative for all students to remain calm, sober and cooperate with us during this struggle. We understand that this situation may raise concerns, and we will strive to keep you informed of any developments.
“Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we will fight diligently to ensure a smooth and orderly process throughout this investigation.”
