Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, on Sunday as a ‘very sad loss’.
Sanwo-Olu also urged the Super Eagles to rebuild and go again after.
In a series of tweets via his X account on Monday, Sanwo-Olu also congratulated William Troost-Ekong for winning the Player of the Tournament.
“A very sad loss for the Super Eagles. They gave their all in this tournament, but in the end, it was left to fine margins,” the governor tweeted.
“Over the course of the tournament, we brought together thousands of people to enjoy football across 25 viewing centres as our team carried the hopes and dreams of the nation.
“In victory and in loss, this team has done us proud, and we will fondly remember this AFCON as a powerful force that brought us all together.
“Congratulations to William Troost-Ekong for being crowned the AFCON Player of the Tournament.
“Well done to our champs, let’s rebuild and go again.”
Arogidigba Global Journal reports that Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller scored for Ivory Coast to ensure they win their third AFCON trophy as William Troost-Ekong’s goal was not enough for Jose Peseiro’s men.
