The Senate will today meet with the Service Chiefs to discuss the growing incidence of insecurity in the country.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the session with the Service Chiefs will be closed door.
Senator, representing Lagos East and chairman, the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, Adetokunbo Abiru, confirmed the meeting between the lawmakers and the Service Chiefs.
The Senate had, in its resolution last week, summoned the Service Chiefs to appear before it today..
One of the lawmakers, who spoke with Nigerian Tribune in confidence, disclosed that the executive session held on Tuesday was to prepare ahead of the meeting with Service Chiefs, which he explained could take place from Wednesday to Thursday.
He stated:” We also discussed the worsening economic crisis in the country and dangerous signals from states where Nigerians are already staging protests.”
However, Senator Abiru told journalists that the scheduled meeting with the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, earlier fixed for Tuesday, would now be held on Friday.
According to him, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor on the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week by 9:00 a.m. prompt.
“Postponement of the interface between our committee and the CBN governor arose from the fact that he and other managers of the nation’s economy have been interfacing with our colleagues in the House of Representatives since morning without knowing when exactly the session would end .
“We would have fixed Wednesday or Thursday this week as new day for the interface, but the Senate as a whole has fixed the two days, for very critical and constructive engagement with the Service Chiefs .
“This made us to eventually settle for Friday this week for interface with the CBN governor by 9:00 a.m.
“Communication to this effect would be forwarded to the CBN Governor today (Tuesday) and possibly other government officials managing the economy”.
The Senate, at plenary, considered a motion from Senator Ahmad Lawan on the demise of former governor of Yobe State, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim.
The Red Chamber observed a minute silence for the deceased and constituted a nine- man delegation for condolence visit to the governor of Yobe State and family of the deceased.
The delegation is to be led by former Kebbi State governor and Senator representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero.
