IHS Nigeria, a telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa has completed the deployment of over 10,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
This significant milestone was achieved through its subsidiary, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), and aligns with the Federal Government’s National Broadband Plan, aiming for a 70 percent broadband penetration in Nigeria by 2025.

Kazeem Oladepo, vice president of GICL, emphasised the importance of addressing the challenges posed by limited metropolitan and long-haul fiber optic networks.
Oladepo said, “Our approach to fiber optic cable deployment concentrates on implementing networks on an open access, shared infrastructure basis, providing robust and scalable fiber pairs and alternate ducts to ensure multiple operators can utilize the infrastructure.”
IHS Nigeria, a key player in the telecommunications industry, has strategically focused on Fiber-to-the-Tower (FTTT) deployment to enhance transmission capacity.
This move aims to improve the performance of fiber access networks and facilitate the introduction of next-generation technologies, including the much-anticipated 5G services.
By connecting towers, IHS Nigeria is extending fiber infrastructure to core metropolitan areas, contributing to the efficient delivery of digital services to homes, corporations, and public institutions in collaboration with its partners.
In addition to GICL’s impressive fiber optic network accomplishment, IHS Nigeria has successfully implemented mobile network coverage in over 580 previously unconnected rural communities through its rural telephony program.
This initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to meeting Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) rollout targets and supporting the Federal Government’s digital inclusion agenda by delivering essential voice and data services to underserved communities.

Oladepo further highlighted the collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders, including customers, and state and federal agencies, which contributed to achieving this remarkable volume of fiber optic cable network delivery in under three years.
He said, “We are committed to supporting the Federal Government’s digital economy objectives, and this milestone demonstrates the possibilities of accelerated critical infrastructure roll-out when key stakeholders align their objectives.”
