Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has advised the Council of Legal Education to, without delay, set up a probe panel to investigate the ongoing controversy over the alleged ban on the use of hijab at the Nigerian Law School.
MURIC made the call in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Isiaq Akintola, on Thursday.
The controversy over the hijab ban at Law School campuses across the country surfaced a few days ago, when it was alleged that the Director General of the Nigerian law schools issued a verbal directive to disallow female Muslim students from wearing hijab during their examinations.
Akintola, in his reaction, urged the council to investigate the matter immediately and suggested that the DG allow the probe panel to conduct a free, fair and transparent investigation.
Akintola, while condemning the action of the DG, alleged that she poses a threat to healthy interaction and freedom of religion in the school.
“We therefore urge the Council of Legal Education to set up a probe panel to investigate the hijab imbroglio. We further demand that the DG recuse herself to allow the probe panel to conduct a free, fair and transparent investigation.
”The current DG poses a threat to healthy interaction and freedom of religion. She cannot create a balanced playing field for Muslim and Christian students, particularly during critical examinations like the call-to-bar final examination.
“This DG should be sacked if she fails to resign for unnecessarily dragging the good name of the Law School into this matter, for denying the hijab hullabaloo and for coming into office with an anti-Muslim mindset.”
