The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has said the Renewed Hope Agenda of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030 cannot be achieved without an efficient, accountable and future-ready civil service.
Olaopa stated this in Asaba when he led federal commissioners, chairmen and members of state and FCT Civil Service Commissions on a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday John Onyeme, at Government House, Asaba, as part of activities marking the 45th National Council of the Civil Service Commissions of the Federation.
In a statement issued by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Ibraheem Zakariyya, on Tuesday, Olaopa said the commission was strengthening policy intelligence, managerial capability and bureaucratic efficiency, driven by increased technology penetration and accountability to the Nigerian people.
He noted that, to rewire the organisational intelligence quotient of the federal service, the FCSC had developed a strategic plan to which all 36 states of the federation signed on last year.
According to him, the commission is currently conducting a baseline assessment to determine the extent to which state commissions have implemented the plan over the past year. He added that incentives would be introduced to produce pilot champions to drive the plan across the federation.
The FCSC chairman explained that the Civil Service Commission, first conceived in Britain in 1853, was established to promote and protect merit as its core mandate, while also managing and implementing the Federal Character principle.
He observed that the service was facing significant challenges, particularly in the implementation of merit, competition with the private sector for talent, generational transition and wage issues.
Olaopa, however, commended the Delta State Government for its implementation of the new minimum wage, describing it as a morale booster for the workforce and a practical example of placing staff welfare at the heart of reforms.
In his response, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday John Onyeme, welcomed the delegation and assured it of the state government’s continued support and hospitality throughout the three-day council meeting.
He commended the FCSC for choosing Delta State as host and for its leadership in driving reforms aimed at repositioning the civil service for improved service delivery.
