England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed concern over Cole Palmer’s repeated injury problems, saying the Chelsea forward is missing too many opportunities with the national team.
Palmer has withdrawn from the latest England camp after reportedly suffering discomfort and pain, with Tuchel saying the player cannot compete at his highest level while carrying the issue.
According to Fabrizio Romano on X on Friday, Tuchel said, “I am told he is playing with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain.”
Tuchel said Palmer informed the relevant parties of his decision to withdraw, while Chelsea also communicated with England.
The England boss acknowledged that Palmer’s repeated absences are injury-related and stressed that the situation is not the player’s fault.
“He misses too many opportunities, and he misses way too many camps with injuries. It’s not his fault,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel also explained that Palmer’s regular presence at England camps is important to his assessment of the player and his development within the national team setup.
“I can only judge what I witness in my team. For that you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp there is a next level you cannot achieve unless you do it in my team,” he added.
