Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has declared three days of mourning in the state over the death of Bamanga Tukur, a former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a mark of honour for the nonagenarian, the flag should fly at half mast for three days
Tukur, an elder statesman, businessman and prominent politician, died in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, Governor Fintiri described the death as a monumental loss to Adamawa State and Nigeria, saying Tukur left an enduring imprint on the political and socio-economic development of the country.
Finitri praised the deceased for his courage, foresight, patriotism and lifelong commitment to public service, describing him as a political colossus whose contributions to the state and nation would remain part of Nigeria’s history.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a colossus who made remarkable contributions to the development of the then Gongola state, Adamawa State and Nigeria.
His wealth of experience, wisdom and commitment to public service earned him a place of honour in our national history,” Fintiri said.
The governor said he would personally miss Tukur’s counsel and extensive experience, particularly on matters affecting Adamawa State and the country.
“I will personally miss his wise counsel and the depth of experience he brought to matters concerning our state and nation. His passing has left a significant void that will be difficult to fill,” he added.
Fintiri extended his condolences to Tukur’s immediate family, friends, associates and the people of Adamawa State, urging them to draw strength from the legacy of service and leadership he left behind.
He prayed Almighty Allah to forgive Tukur’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.
Bamanga Tukur served as the first civilian governor of the former Gongola State and later rose to become national chairman of the PDP, playing prominent roles in Nigeria’s political development over several decades.
