African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Sokoto, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya, has endorsed the proposal by the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to introduce a targeted fuel subsidy if elected President.
Dan’Iya said Atiku’s proposed policy could help reduce the burden of rising transportation and food costs on Nigerians, particularly low-income families.
In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Aminu Abdullahi, the former Sokoto State deputy governor said the country’s current economic hardship demanded policies that would directly cushion the effects of rising living costs.

He said the removal of petrol subsidy in 2023 had contributed significantly to higher transportation and production costs, which had subsequently affected the prices of food and other essential commodities.
“At a time when Nigerian families are struggling to afford transportation, food and basic necessities, any credible policy capable of reducing the cost of living deserves serious consideration,” Dan’Iya said.
He said Atiku’s proposal should not be viewed as a return to the old subsidy system, but as an opportunity to establish a transparent and accountable mechanism targeted at vulnerable Nigerians.
Dan’Iya also advocated strengthening domestic refining capacity to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products and ensure that any subsidy intervention delivers measurable benefits to citizens.
The ADC candidate described Atiku as an experienced politician with the economic understanding and political maturity required to implement reforms capable of stimulating production, creating employment and restoring investor confidence.
He urged Nigerians to assess political parties and candidates based on their policies and capacity to address the challenges confronting the country rather than political sentiments.
“The 2027 election is an opportunity for Nigerians to choose a government that understands their hardship and is prepared to act. We must support policies that reduce the burden on our people, restore hope, strengthen institutions and put Nigeria back on the path of sustainable development,” he said.
Dan’Iya called on ADC supporters across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to mobilise support for the Atiku-led presidential ticket, expressing confidence that an ADC-led government could tackle insecurity, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and economic hardship.
