The Lagos State Government has arrested a suspect for vandalising a concrete barrier installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the expressway at unauthorised points at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, along the Ikorodu Road.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on X on Saturday, noting that the arrest followed monitoring and enforcement operations carried out the previous day.
According to Wahab, the suspect was found deliberately removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements and other critical structural components that contribute to the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier.
“During monitoring and enforcement operations yesterday, our team apprehended a suspect at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, along the Ikorodu Road, for vandalising a concrete barrier installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the expressway at unauthorised points,” he wrote.
The commissioner continued, “The suspect was found deliberately removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements, and other critical structural components that contribute to the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier.
“The suspect has been arrested and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. This enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users and residents”
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to safeguard public infrastructure against acts of vandalism.
Wahab emphasised that those found engaging in such activities would face prosecution as provided by the law.
This development comes amid repeated concerns over the removal of metal components from public structures across the state, with authorities maintaining that such acts compromise safety and waste public resources invested in infrastructure.
PUNCH Online reported on Friday that 27 suspected hoodlums were arrested for allegedly vandalising a bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also ordered the arrest and prosecution of vandals.
