Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians who are yet to obtain a National Identity Number to register, saying credible population data is crucial for effective national planning and improved public service delivery.
In a statement to commemorate the 2026 World Population Day, Mrs Tinubu said Nigeria’s growing population makes it increasingly important for the government to have accurate demographic records to guide policy decisions and development planning.
She appealed to citizens who have not enrolled for the National Identity Number to do so.
“I encourage every Nigerian to register and obtain a National Identity Number (NIN), if they have not done so,” she said.
The First Lady said reliable population figures would enable the government to better respond to the needs of Nigerians by making informed decisions and allocating resources more effectively.

“Accurate population data will enable the government to plan effectively and provide essential services for Nigeria’s growing population,” she added.
Mrs Tinubu also stressed the importance of investing in people, particularly women and young people, saying they remain central to the country’s future.
She called for greater access to quality healthcare, education and opportunities that would allow every Nigerian to thrive.
“Today I join the global community in support of our commitment to building a future where every individual, especially women and young people, have access to quality healthcare, education and opportunities to reach their full potential,” she said.
According to the First Lady, rapid population growth should encourage stronger planning and greater collaboration between government and citizens to build a more sustainable future.
She urged Nigerians to work together to improve family wellbeing, support the youth and advance national development.
“Through collective action, we can empower families, promote healthy lives, support our youth and ensure sustainable development for generations to come,” she said.
