Nafisat Hammed, the estranged wife of Yoruba actor Akin Olaiya, has disclosed why she left her marriage.
Recall that Olaiya and Nafisat tied the knot in June 2025 at a ceremony in Oyo State, with videos from the wedding widely shared on social media.
Speculation about trouble in the union intensified after a letter purportedly signed by the actor surfaced online, announcing the dissolution of the marriage.
However, Olaiya never shared the letter on his official social media platforms, leaving many uncertain about the true status of the relationship.
In a viral video obtained on Wednesday, she confirmed that the marriage had ended and revealed some of the reasons behind her decision to leave.
Addressing the controversy, she said many people had formed opinions without knowing what truly happened.
“Like yesterday, I saw what was trending on social media. A lot of people were voicing their own sides of the story without knowing the facts. But I am here to tell my side,” she said.
According to Nafisat, she walked away from the marriage three months ago because of the emotional pain and alleged mistreatment she experienced.
““Three months ago, I left my marriage because I was in pain and mistreated. I felt I did not matter.
“Nobody prays to stay in a marital home that involves violence. Regarding the divorce letter circulating on social media, everything is quite chaotic. In reality, my husband and I have not been together for a long time—since last year,” she stated.
She explained that she deliberately kept details of her marital challenges away from the public while she was still in the relationship.
“That is something I would never do on social media. But I want people to understand that it does not make sense to say that I just packed up and left without cause, simply for my own enjoyment. That is not possible. You should all consider whether that makes sense. All I can say is that I handled it,” she added.
Nafisat also alleged that she was betrayed by two people she trusted the most, claiming that Olaiya eventually married one of her close friends.
She said, “Imagine, after all that mistreatment, the pain, and everything, the husband ends up marrying your own best friend. What does that mean? It is because I am not the type of person who will just come and tell my side of the story so openly. I am not used to it … in our culture, we are not trained that way. We cannot just come and expose someone.”
She further dismissed rumours circulating online that she left the marriage because of a health condition, insisting she had no knowledge of the source of such claims.
Reacting to the speculation, she said, “Regarding the claims on social media that he would drag me out because I have an infection—I do not know where that is coming from, or if he is the one spreading such rumours.
“All I can say is that my husband and I are no more [together]. The two people I trusted ended up betraying me; they really disappointed me.”
Despite the painful experience, Nafisat said she has chosen to move on with her life, prioritising her peace, happiness and future.
“It is not a big deal. That is what he decided to do, and that is what he has in mind. I do not want to put myself in his shoes, as we are no longer together. I am praying for a good future for myself, and I choose my peace and happiness over everything. Thank God I am living my own life,” She added.
