The statement disclosed that the students were tracked and arrested on campus while allegedly in possession of charms. Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the duo are members of the Juris Confraternity and had been initiated into the cult group before gaining admission into the university.
The university management stated that the suspects have confessed to their membership of the confraternity and would be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Salisu Ogbo Usman, reiterated the institution’s determination to eliminate cultism and other criminal activities from the campus environment.
Professor Usman said the university would sustain its ongoing security operations until sanity is fully restored within and around the institution.
He also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children and wards closely and pay attention to the company they keep to prevent them from being lured into cultism and other criminal activities.
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that the university has commenced the profiling of cult members who voluntarily surrender to authorities, sign undertakings, and pledge to renounce cultism permanently.
According to him, the window remains open for students willing to embrace the opportunity by reporting to the Office of the Chief Security Officer or the Office of the Dean, Student Affairs.
Professor Usman added that the university plans to organise a formal renunciation ceremony for students prepared to publicly denounce their membership of cult groups and adopt a lawful and responsible lifestyle.
He commended security agencies, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and well-meaning individuals for their continued support in promoting peace and security within the university community.
The Vice-Chancellor also called on students to cooperate with ongoing efforts aimed at maintaining a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, and research.
The latest arrests come days after the university announced the apprehension of another student over alleged cult-related activities, underscoring the institution’s renewed resolve to tackle cultism on campus.
