The 4 Special Forces Command of the Nigerian Army marked its end-of-year 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) event with a vibrant display of cultural heritage, traditional dances, and local cuisine, reinforcing camaraderie and esprit de corps among officers and soldiers.
Speaking at the event yesterday at the 4 Special Forces Command in Doma, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, represented by his deputy, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, commended the Special Forces for their commitment to maintaining security in the state. He acknowledged their resilience in combating threats and ensuring peace.
“The Special Forces have been instrumental in ensuring the safety of our people. Their doggedness and professionalism in tackling security challenges have significantly contributed to the stability we enjoy today,” Dr Akabe stated.
The Commander of the 4 Special Forces Command, Major General H.E. Nzan, highlighted the historical significance of WASA, tracing its origins to the colonial era when it was introduced to allow West African soldiers to celebrate and participate in their local cultural festivals.
“These cultural rituals were traditionally in the form of festivals where sacrifices were offered at the end of the harvest or the beginning of the planting season for peace and prosperity. The military authorities saw the importance of these traditions and institutionalised WASA as an annual event within the barracks,” he said.
He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen O.O. Oluyede, for his support in making the celebration possible. “The Chief of Army Staff was magnanimous enough to release funds for this year’s WASA celebration, reinforcing one of the pillars of his command philosophy, which focuses on sound administration and troop motivation,” he added.
Dr Akabe assured the military of the state government’s continued support in strengthening security collaboration. “We recognise the sacrifices made by the armed forces, and as a government, we remain committed to working closely with the military to sustain peace and security in Nasarawa State,” he said.
Daily Sun reports that the event featured colourful cultural performances, military displays, and an array of local delicacies, bringing together military personnel, dignitaries, and their families in a celebration of unity and tradition.
