Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday visited the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shaginsha, following an invitation from the agency to discuss the recent removal of the former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
According House in a statement issued by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, on behalf of other members, the visit aimed to provide clarity on the legal basis of their decision.
During the meeting at the DSS office, the Assembly members reaffirmed that the removal of the ex-Speaker, Obasa was fully in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act.
They emphasized that the legislative process followed due procedure, in accordance with Sections 92 and 96, which govern the election and removal of the Speaker.
The Assembly also highlighted that, with the granting of legislative autonomy to State Assemblies, they have the constitutional right to regulate their internal proceedings without external interference.
“The decision to remove the Speaker was carried out through a democratic process, with the necessary majority vote, and is seen as a lawful exercise of our duties”, the statement read.
The Assembly members expressed their gratitude to the DSS for their professionalism during the engagement, noting the smooth and respectful nature of the interaction. They also confirmed that all members previously detained in connection with the matter have now been released.
In concluding the statement, the Assembly reiterated its commitment to fulfilling its legislative responsibilities, with a focus on serving the best interests of Lagosians.
They called on all stakeholders, including the executive arm of government and the public, to respect the sanctity of legislative proceedings and avoid undue interference.
