GOC 6 Division applauds resilience of officers, other stakeholders in Niger Delta

From Ben Dunno, Warri

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has commended the efforts of his men and officers in sustaining peace across the Niger Delta region, contributing to the boosting of crude oil production per day towards sustainable national economic growth.

Speaking in a goodwill message delivered in his capacity as Special Guest of Honour at the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA), co-hosted by 63 Brigade, Asaba, and 3 Battalion, Effurun Barracks, General Abdussalam also acknowledged sister services (Navy and Air Force), the Delta State government, and private security outfit Tantita Security Services Limited (TSSL) for their immense contributions.

While expressing gratitude to the indigenes of the Niger Delta region for their support and cooperation in ensuring the sustainability of peaceful coexistence in their various communities, the GOC noted that the success recorded by his men and officers in the region would not have been possible without their commitment to peace.

According to him, “For the Division to effectively surmount its complex environment, it would require troops to remain disciplined, professional, focused, and shun all forms of illegality, however tempting they may appear.”

“It would also demand effective synergy with our sister services and other security agencies, as well as solid support from our dear families.”

“The dogged professionalism and military competencies of our troops have proven to be veritable recipes for operational successes in the field.”

“The series of gains recorded by the Division against illegal oil bunkerers and economic saboteurs in our Area of Responsibility underpins this assertion.”

“This is evident in the current improved Nigeria’s daily oil production and relative peace in the Niger Delta.”

“However, we must continue to fight all illegalities in this region. We must continue to guard and protect critical national infrastructure to ensure that oil production continues to rise in order for the economy to improve for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

“In this regard, the WASA is geared towards positive reflection on the closing year in order to refuel for the year coming. Having seen the organisation on ground, the beautiful colours displayed, and the events that unfolded at today’s event, I can easily agree that the occasion marks a fitting close to the Year 2024 activities.”

“I am therefore particularly pleased with the level of preparation, readiness, and commitment demonstrated by the officers, soldiers, and families of the Brigade Headquarters and 3 Battalion Rear towards the success of WASA 2024.”

“On this note, I would like to once again recognise and sincerely thank the Commander 63 Brigade for his commendable leadership while extending my warm appreciation to the organising committee for a job well done. I equally commend the Commanding Officer 3 Battalion, both Main and Rear, for the Museum project commissioned today.”

“I thank all the invited guests for coming and commend all the performing cultural troupes for the good outing. It was indeed a memorable event, and we all look forward to seeing the bonfire flames ignited at the retreat. I wish you all a prosperous 2025.”

In his speech at the occasion, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, commended the Army for their commitment to maintaining law and order in various communities across the state, noting that this has helped in ensuring sustainable peace in the state.

He promised his administration’s support to the operations of the military in the state, adding that no price is too much to pay to sustain peace and ensure the security of lives and property of the people being governed.

The WASA celebration featured a range of activities, including cultural dances, calisthenics displays, and a tug-of-war competition.

The event also included the commissioning of a Museum project at the barracks and the presentation of awards to deserving personnel.

The Nigerian Army’s WASA celebration is an annual event aimed at promoting unity, discipline, and professionalism among troops.

This year’s celebration demonstrated the Army’s commitment to recognising and rewarding its personnel’s hard work and dedication to service.
