The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has described as deceptive a report circulated in a piece of the media purporting that Nigerian inmates are fed with N200 day by day as an alternative of N750 accepted by the Federal Authorities.
Spokesperson of NCoS, Assistant Controller of Corrections, Abubakar Umar, in an announcement on Friday mentioned the report which has come to the eye of the Service “is fake, deceptive, and mischievous in all ramifications”.
Whereas debunking the claims that Nigerian inmates had been fed with N200 day by day, Umar insisted that inmates in custodial centres throughout the nation are fed with N750 as accepted by the Federal Authorities, noting that feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria is within the public area, and distributors had been often paid the accepted quantity upon completion of provide.
He added even the accepted N750 is now not sustainable and that the Service is making efforts to attraction to the Federal Authorities for upward assessment of feeding allowance to replicate the current financial realities.
The assertion reads partially: “For the avoidance of doubt, the general public could want to word that feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria is within the public area, and distributors are paid the accepted quantity upon completion of provide.
“Contract for ration provide is often made public, and the situations clearly acknowledged for distributors to use consistent with the general public procurement act 2007.
“Moreover, each custodial centre has a ration committee that workouts supervisory function over high quality assurance of provide, preparation, and distribution to inmates to make sure that they’re fed inside the accepted finances.
“The authorities have, through the years, demonstrated dedication in direction of bettering inmates’ welfare by way of feeding in addition to empowerment via efficient reformation and rehabilitation programmes.
“Whereas the Service is making efforts to attraction to the Federal Authorities for upward assessment of feeding allowance to replicate the current financial realities, will probably be unfair and unpatriotic for anybody to manufacture tales simply to denigrate the Service.
“The general public is suggested to discountenance the false report and be assured of the irrevocable dedication of the Controller-Common of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, to work for the final good of individuals in custody whilst real help of well-meaning Nigerians will proceed to be appreciated,” NCoS acknowledged.
