The Presidency has accused the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed of playing irresponsible politics as controversy regarding President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, which he claims disproportionately disadvantaged the northern states.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, described Mohammed’s comments as irresponsible politics that distract from his governance responsibilities.
“The President’s administration is focused on national development and collaboration with state leaders,” Dare asserted. He urged Governor Mohammed to prioritise the welfare of Bauchi citizens instead of engaging in political posturing.
Mohammed had publicly stated that, “Tinubu and I are not on good terms because his policies are causing hardship for the citizens,” emphasising that many in the North rely heavily on federal allocations.
He warned that the tax reforms could exacerbate economic challenges in his region, potentially leading to “anarchy” if implemented without proper dialogue.
In response to the presidency’s accusations of threats, Mohammed’s spokesperson clarified that the governor’s remarks were intended to advocate for equitable policies rather than intimidate. “It is out of character for Governor Bala Mohammed to make any threats,” Mukhtar Gidado stated.
The Presidency in a statement entitled: “Gov. Bala Mohammed is Playing Irresponsible Politics”, states: “The President Bola Tinubu’s administration is one that is laser-focused on issues of development and how to improve on the overall well-being of Nigerians.
“The focus of this government is on how to build stronger collaborations with sub-nationals and other critical stakeholders on matters that affect the lives of Nigerians.
“President Tinubu won an election and secured a national mandate from Nigerians and he will not surrender that to satisfy the palate of some pseudo activists and later day crusaders.
“President Tinubu is a listening leader and also a leader that strongly believes in the institutions of state.”
