A renowned academic from the University of Abuja, Professor Maxwell Nwachukwu Opara, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) and appointing its board members.
He said the move is a significant step towards promoting national unity, equity, and regional development in Nigeria.
In his letter of appreciation to President Tinubu, Opara specifically lauded the appointment of Dr. Clifford Ogbede as Executive Director for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Natural Resources.
He cited Ogbede’s wealth of experience in advancing Nigeria’s economic interests internationally, making him a perfect fit for the role.
Opara also acknowledged the SEDC’s potential to transform the Southeast region by addressing infrastructure deficits, unlocking development potential, and fostering reconciliation.
He expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for their support and prompt passage of the SEDC bill.
The letter read thus: “I write to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for signing the bill establishing the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC). This landmark action reflects your commitment to fostering national unity, equity, and regional development.
“Your recent appointment of the Chairman and Executive Directors of the SEDC Board, particularly the selection of Dr. Clifford Ogbede as Executive Director for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Natural Resources, is a commendable move.
“Dr. Ogbede’s wealth of experience in advancing Nigeria’s economic interests on the international stage makes his appointment a perfect fit for this critical role. This decision underscores your administration’s dedication to merit-based appointments that prioritize the nation’s progress.
“The establishment of the SEDC represents a new dawn for the Southeast region. It is a vehicle of transformation, poised to integrate the region economically, address infrastructure deficits, and unlock its vast development potential. Furthermore, it holds the promise of healing historical wounds and fostering the desired reconciliation by addressing the lingering effects of the Nigerian Civil War.
“I equally extend my profound appreciation to the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their unwavering support and prompt passage of the SEDC bill. Their commitment to this cause exemplifies a shared vision for national cohesion and progress.
“Your Excellency, with this historic step, you have given the Southeast region a renewed sense of hope and inclusion in the Nigerian project.
“I have no doubt that the people of southeastern Nigeria will pledge their support for the successful implementation of the SEDC’s mandate and look forward to the positive impact it will bring to the region and the nation at large.
“May your tenure continue to be marked by bold, impactful initiatives that leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.”
