It was a double celebration for the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, on Monday as the institution launched an e-ride and unveiled a new logo.
The double event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola and supported by the management team.
At the launch of the e-ride, Prof. Ogunsola, said the electric buses would serve the students and staff and acknowledged that it is the first initiative in any Nigerian tertiary institutions.
According to the VC, UNILAG pledged not to pollute the air and decided to operate a central generator while also working to reduce car emission on the campus.
Prof. Ogunsola also disclosed that the university management is working to reduce the use of paper in the offices because to help curtail the logging of wood that results in environmental degradation.
She revealed that the introduction of the electrical buses is in collaboration with Ogata Global Resource and Chart eco with initiate eight buses for staff and students of the university at a cheaper rate.
Prof. Ogunsola, Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, Deputy VC (Development Service), Prof. Lucian Nwachukwu, Deputy VC (Management Services), Bursar, University Libriarian, Prof. Yetunde Zaid, and acting Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde, rode in the new buses to the main gate.
Chairman of Ogata Global Resource, Mr. Henry Eke, said the introduction of the 14-seater electric buses is partnership with Chart eco to alleviate transportation problem on campus.
Eke, an alumnus of UNILAG, said the introduction of the electric buses would further enhance the brand of the university, adding, “the idea about the e-ride came when I visited China and rode on electrical bike.
On the logo, Prof. Ogunsola said the university management decided to unveil a new one to stem the use of wrong logo and the decision to launch the new logo at the main gate.
“Today, we unveil new logo for the university. The new logo will go a long to project the image of the university. We discovered that our logo does not represent our proper identity,’’ the VC stated.
Assisted by the university management team, Prof. Ogunsola unveiled the new logo at the main gate amid applause.
