Local Government Councils in Bauchi State have been urged to rehabilitate broken-down boreholes to avert the outbreak of waterborne diseases in rural communities.
The District Head of Ganjuwa and Madakin Bauchi, Alhaji Mohammed Gidado, gave the advice on Monday during a sensitisation visit by the Committee on the establishment of the WASH Directorate to Kafin Madaki.
He said that several boreholes that had broken down require urgent repairs to prevent communities from resorting to unsafe water sources such as streams, rivers, and unprotected wells for their water needs.
The traditional ruler expressed gratitude for the establishment of the Directorate and appealed to the councillors of the local government to visit their respective communities to assess the level of borehole malfunctions with the view to putting them back in working condition.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Engineer Habib Mohammed, urged the local government to allocate office space, furnish the new Directorate, and deploy qualified personnel to ensure the efficient delivery of WASH services.
In his remarks, a director from the Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Nasiru Dewu, directed the Council to expedite action in submitting the list of senior officers who will man the office to the commission for urgent screening and approval.
