The Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi State Area Command, has donated books, pens and food items to 1,700 pupils of Gwandu Emirate Model Primary School in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi state.
Command Comptroller, Iheanacho Ernest Ejike, while distributing the items to the pupils, explained that the donation was part of Customs’ corporate social responsibility to its host community.
He noted that the charity visit to the school was meant to interact with the pupils, to educate them on the official job of Customs and to draw their attention to the need for them to understand laws of the nation and contribution of Customs to the national economy.
Ejike also told the pupils that every working and responsible citizen should pay tax to enable the country get money to build schools across the country.
Said he: “We are here to give you a little token as part of our corporate responsibility and to tell you the work of Customs, which include collecting revenues and to stop smuggling activities in the country. You all know that Kebbi is a border line state therefore our work here is inevitable.”
Earlier, the Headmaster of the school, Mallam Aminu Sani in his response thanked officers and men of the Nigeria Customs for the charity visit and urged them to sustain the tempo of curbing smuggling illicit goods into the country. Emir of Gwandu, who was represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Bashar, a member of the emirate council, described the gesture as timely. He said the charity visit would open the eyes of the pupils to see and know the existence of Customs in their domain.
