Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday passed through Second Reading a bill seeking to establish the National Institute of Agriculture Research and Entrepreneurship in Owode Yewa, Ogun State.
The private member’s bill was sponsored by Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology.
Speaking on the general principles of the bill, Hon. Akinlade, who represents Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency in Ogun State, emphasised that the proposed institute is crucial to addressing the pressing need for innovation in agriculture and empowering youth through entrepreneurship.
“Agriculture is a key sector in Nigeria’s economy, but its growth has been hindered by limited access to research-driven solutions and capacity-building initiatives,” Akinlade said.
He added that, in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of the current government, the establishment of the National Institute of Agriculture Research and Entrepreneurship will provide a centre of excellence for advanced agricultural research. The institute will promote sustainable farming and young entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills necessary to enhance productivity and economic growth.
Hon. Akinlade further argued that Owode Yewa and the wider Yewa region of Ogun State are ideal locations for the institute, given the area’s rich agricultural heritage and its accessibility to both local and international markets. He noted that the establishment of the institute would not only benefit the region but also contribute significantly to the nation’s food security and economic growth.
He further stated that the creation of the institute would address issues of equity, justice, and fairness in the allocation of national resources. It would also create employment and increase social, economic, and educational development in the region.
Following overwhelming support for the bill via a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, referred the bill to the House Committee on Agricultural Research and Institutions for further legislative action.
