The Kano State Police Command on Tuesday announced the arrest of a currency syndicate with fake currencies totalling N129.5 billion.
The syndicate, comprising Muhammed Muktar (35), Nura Ibrahim (26), and Muhammed Abdullahi (30), was paraded before the press at the Bompai Police Headquarters in the state.
Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who briefed the press on behalf of Commissioner Salman Dogo Garba, revealed that the recovered counterfeit currencies included $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000, and N1.4 million.
The police also announced the arrest of other suspects involved in various offences, including eight armed robbers, 10 cattle rustlers, three kidnappers, one abduction suspect, and four drug dealers.
Within the past two weeks, the police rescued several individuals, including one kidnap victim, one abduction victim, and 10 human trafficking victims.
Other suspects arrested in the state included six tricycle thieves, four motorcycle thieves, four fraudsters, and 22 thugs (Yan Daba).
Items recovered during the operations included ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles, three parcels and 175 wraps of Indian hemp, 250 Diazepam tablets, 278 sheep, seven cattle, five necklaces, five earrings, 10 SIM cards, and 15 ATM cards.
The police spokesman attributed the success to the “multifaceted approach” adopted to enhance security in the state.
“Businesses are thriving, residents are feeling safer in their homes, and the general sense of security and well-being has been greatly enhanced,” he said. He also pledged to strengthen partnerships with other security agencies and the community to ensure a safer Kano State.
