The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a stern warning to bakeries nationwide against the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.
The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, delivered the warning during a News Agency of Nigeria Forum, as reported on Sunday.
She stressed that bakeries found guilty of using these harmful substances would face strict sanctions.
“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes in. We routinely inspect products, sometimes in response to complaints through our reform office,” she explained.
“We have closed down several bakeries for using bromate in bread production. If we discover or suspect that bromate has been used in bread, we will shut the bakery immediately.”
Adeyeye also highlighted that many water-producing factories had been closed for substandard or unhygienic practices.
She stressed the importance of the Regulatory Inspection Directorate in ensuring compliance with standards.
“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate is crucial because it ensures that what is registered with us is the same as what remains in the market.
“After registration, some manufacturers may alter their production processes or formulas. Post-marketing surveillance ensures that standards are maintained and that consumers are protected,” she concluded.
