He polled a total of 436 votes to defeat his rivals, Bamidele Atumbi, former Treasurer of the Union, who got 97 votes, and Garba Mohammed, who scored 39 votes.
The election, which ended in the early hours of Thursday, took place at the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Union, held in Owerri, Imo State, with 602 delegates from the 36 state councils and Abuja in attendance.

Other national officers of the Union were returned unopposed, including the National Treasurer, Victor Ndukwe, former Abia State Council Chairman, and Eze Adiuku, Zonal Secretary for Zone C (South East).
