A coalition of investors managing Government Reserve Areas (GRAs) in Oyo State has raised serious concerns regarding the activities of unregistered estate developers who are allegedly taking advantage of the infrastructural progress initiated by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
During a press conference held in Ibadan, representatives from several registered construction firms, including Aaraji Construction Ltd., Kebar Homes, Afia Homes and Properties, and LFs Racoon Ltd., condemned the actions of these unregistered developers, which they argue are harming the state’s housing sector.
Engineer Raji Kehinde, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasized the dangers posed by these unscrupulous developers, stating, “We are deeply concerned as stakeholders because these individuals are deceiving and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public. We have evidence of their collaboration with greedy actors to exploit innocent buyers. This must stop, and we urge the government to act swiftly.”
Kehinde noted that approximately 18 registered companies are currently collaborating with the Oyo State government on various GRA projects, collectively investing over ₦100 billion to enhance the state’s housing and infrastructure. He stressed the importance of public vigilance, encouraging potential buyers to verify the certification of developers before making any transactions. “People should not patronize developers just because they offer cheap land. Proper verification is crucial,” he added.
Engineer Abdul-jelyl Adekunle Karheem also highlighted the risks associated with developers who have previously faced expulsion from Lagos for similar fraudulent activities. He warned that many of these individuals have now relocated to Ibadan to continue their illegal practices without proper registration. “This must not be allowed to continue,” he asserted.
In response to the issue, Adekunle revealed that the group is actively engaging with the state Commissioner for Lands and other relevant authorities to safeguard investors attracted to Oyo State by the ongoing infrastructural developments.
Also, Hon. Ademola Omotoso, Chairman of the Oyo State Housing Corporation, represented by board member Mrs. Adeola, reassured the public that efforts are being made to regulate the housing sector. “The government is committed to identifying and eliminating illegal operators and land speculators,” Adeola stated, adding that Governor Makinde has fostered a conducive business environment that should not be jeopardized by fraudulent individuals.
The group called on the public and investors to work with registered developers to ensure the integrity of housing projects throughout the state, urging collaboration to maintain trust in the growing real estate sector.
