In a striking display of opposition strength, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Action Peoples Party (APP) have made sweeping gains in the recent local government elections held in Abia and Rivers states, respectively.
These results could signal a shifting political landscape, as both states saw significant wins for opposition parties across numerous local government areas.
ZLP Triumphs in Abia
The Zenith Labour Party emerged as the dominant force in Abia State, clinching victories in 15 of the state’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the November 2 elections.
The remaining two LGAs were secured by the Young Progressive Party (YPP), underscoring the opposition’s strong presence across the state.
Prof. George Chima, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), announced the results on Saturday at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia.
Chima celebrated the scale of political participation, noting that “over 12 political parties” had contested in the election, marking a milestone for ABSIEC. He described the process as “free, fair, and credible,” adding that it demonstrated the commission’s commitment to electoral integrity.
Chima further noted the logistical feat the election represented. “We have completed a task that could typically take six to twelve months within a span of two months,” he remarked, commending the commission’s dedication to ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
APP Dominates in Rivers
Meanwhile, in Rivers State, the Action Peoples Party achieved an overwhelming victory, securing 22 of the 23 chairmanship seats in the local government elections.
The Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, shared the results in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Enebeli announced that results for Etche LGA were still pending due to ongoing collation efforts. The commission also stated that the outcome of the 319 councillorship positions would be confirmed upon the completion of this process.
The APP’s dominant performance marks a pivotal moment in Rivers State’s political dynamics, with local governance shifting noticeably towards the opposition.
The recent election outcomes in Abia and Rivers reflect an energised political climate, where opposition parties are challenging longstanding power structures. Prof. Chima highlighted the significance of this engagement, pointing out that the number of participating parties underscored a healthy democratic process in Abia State.
The performance of ZLP in Abia and APP in Rivers might be a barometer for broader trends in Nigerian politics as the country gears up for future elections. With opposition parties securing prominent local government positions, these elections could serve as a springboard for their further involvement and influence in Nigerian governance.
For local residents, these shifts could bring new perspectives to governance, with a focus on fresh leadership and community-centred policies.
As the dust settles from these local government races, both Abia and Rivers now look to their new leaders to deliver on promises of good governance, transparency, and community-driven initiatives that resonate with the electorate’s aspirations for change.
